I was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up there and in North Mississippi, where I still live in the town of Oxford. My father's family is from the Delta -- home of the Blues, a good deal of poverty and racism, and a unique, rich culture found nowhere else in America. My Southern roots have also branched out to Arkansas, where I now spend a lot of time in the mountains to the north, and in Hot Springs, a town with a history of minerals, healing, and a lost grandeur.
