Here is just a sampling of my treasured collection of work by Southern Self-taught artists. During the mid-1990’s I often took trips from Oxford toward Alabama and Georgia, and sometimes Louisiana looking for art by Jimmie Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, Burgess Dulaney , and from Houma, Louisiana, Cyril and Ivy Billiot. I donated some and sold my pieces by Cyril Billiot to the Ogden Museum of Southern art several years ago. The Angels shown here are by his son, Ivy.

I also learned about a lesser known, but equally gifted artist in Memphis named Edwin Jeffrey. His pregnant school girl is one piece I could never sell because of the poignancy of the work. In addition, there are works you see here by Oxford native, Sulton Rogers. The snake, the preacher, and the table wearing red high heels are some of his best pieces.

If you are interested in these or any more works by the artists featured here, just let me know, and I will send prices and detailed images. There are other pieces not shown here yet, but look for works by R.A. Miller of Georgia and Willie White of New Orleans—coming soon.  Just looking at these on my site brings many happy memories of being in the homes of these amazing, gifted artists. - MW
